The Evolution of Horror Films and Society

From gothic castles and masked killers to zombies, witches, and cosmic terrors, horror films have always been more than just scares and screams—they are cultural mirrors reflecting the fears, anxieties, and values of their time. This course examines the horror genre from a critical and historical perspective, exploring how horror cinema both shapes and is shaped by the society that produces it. Students will analyze key films, directors, subgenres, and movements, while considering how horror engages with issues such as gender, race, class, politics, religion, and technology. Through screenings, readings, and discussion, we’ll explore what horror can tell us about the world—and ourselves—when the lights go out.
