Nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation is commonly used in dentistry to help reduce patient anxiety, promote relaxation, and support positive patient behavior during dental procedures.  The Missouri State Board of Dentistry allows nitrous oxide with oxygen sedation as a permitted function delegable by a licensed dentist to a properly trained and qualified dental assistant.

The Metropolitan Community College -Penn Valley Health Science Institute offers a Missouri dental board approved course designed to prepare dental assistants to safely assist in the administration and monitoring of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation in the dental setting.

This hybrid course combines online didactic instruction with in-person clinical hand-on training to meet the educational requirements established by the Missouri State Board of Dentistry for certification.

The course requires 4 hours of virtual lecture, followed by an examination and 4 hours to hands on training, including competency check offs for vital signs and nitrous equipment.  It is required to obtain the legal knowledge of assisting in administration and monitoring nitrous oxide.
